Before we explore how to use camera raw files and Photoshop, it is first necessary to learn what both of these terms mean as explained is this tutorial for Adobe Photoshop. Photoshop is a software program that allows you to modify and create images on your computer. A camera raw file is a type of digital picture file, similar to the common jpeg file, but with some major differences.
Essentially, a jpeg file takes the image seen through the viewfinder of your digital camera, squishes it and modifies it so it will take up less memory. Some parts of your image, especially ‘shadow’ and ‘highlight details’, are lost forever. A raw camera file stores all the data for the image so you have exactly what your camera saw. The file size is about twice as large as a jpeg but is great for high resolution work.
Raw files are manipulated through Photoshop CS (Creative Suite). CS2, 3, and 4 all support camera raw files. However, you are not initially using Photoshop, but rather a part of its Creative Suite – Adobe Bridge. Adobe Bridge is a program that allows you to store and organize your images. Open Adobe Bridge by opening Photoshop and clicking on the Adobe Bridge shortcut button that appears on your default screen.
Use Adobe Bridge to navigate to the folder in which you have stored your raw files. You should see rows of thumbnails. Right-click on the image you wish to manipulate and a fly-out menu will appear. Your best bet is to select open in camera raw. Adobe Bridge will automatically open your selected file in the Camera-Raw plug-in.
When you open a Camera-Raw plug-in window there are five sections you will have to navigate. They are:

3. Workflow options

Options one through four essentially allow you to view your image and workspace in different ways. However, it is likely that you will spend most of your time using the settings panel.
The settings panel allows you to adjust the following:-
White balance – lets you adjust the balance of light in your photo. Select from a preset list of lighting option and then adjust the tint (warm to cool) or temperature (green to purple).
Exposure – changes the amount of light exposed in your photo. Adjust the brightness, contrast, and saturation.
Lens abnormalities – is a more advanced function that allows you to correct for quirks your camera may have.
Sharpening – allows you to make your photo appear crisper.
Curve adjustment – another advanced function that is not applicable for beginner use.
Once you have played with and adjusted your image to your liking, there are four options available to you:
1. Open – This saves your changes and opens your raw file in Photoshop CS2 for further manipulation.
2. Save – This also saves your changes, but in a new file while simultaneously saving your original file.
3. Done – This saves your changes to the original file.
4. Cancel – This deletes any changes you made to your original file.
For starters, it is best to save your raw file as a camera raw database. This keeps your settings together with your original image, even if you rename the file. It works best for files you want to keep on your computer only.
In the beginning, using a raw file over a jpeg may seem complicated and unnecessary. But after you become more familiar with the workings of Photoshop CS2 you will find it better to work with more versatile image files.

I cannot say enough good things about my best friend in the digital world: Photoshop. Suffice to say, I love it! As a Graphic Designer, I use it in 99% of all my projects, and now I enjoy using what I do to make Photoshop Tutorials for others.
You don’t need to be a professional or even and “artist” to create works of art. Nowadays, you don’t even have to know how to draw! I intend to create a series of tutorials to illustrate several ways to use this program for creating beautiful pictures and illustrations just by using photographs. In this particular tutorial, I will be showing you how to turn photos into watercolor paintings in a few easy steps.
The only materials needed to follow along with this tutorial are:
–Photoshop. I use Photoshop CS3, but you can use whichever version you have.
–A photo. Either a photo of your own or a stock photo. Some really good stock photos can be found for free at Stock Exchange.
That’s it! I find a graphic tablet a nice tool for all work I do in Photoshop and they are fairly cheap these days, but it is definitely not necessary.
This tutorial does assume that you have some basic knowledge of Photoshop. Having a basic “beginner knowledge” of the program will help a lot. Also, there is a link in my bio for you to see photos that walk you through everything.
1. Open Photoshop. Then go to File–>Open, select the picture you want to work with and then hit “Open”.
2. On the layers palette (on the right side), right click on the “Background Layer” and select duplicate. Do this twice.
3. Click on the first duplicate layer (this should be your middle layer), then go to Image–>Adjustments–>Desaturate . Then click on the second duplicate layer(your top layer) and do the same.
4. On the top layer, go to Image–>Adjustments–>Invert.
5. Still on the top Layer, set the blending mode (located within the layer palette, looks like this: ) to “Color Dodge”.
6. Still on the top Layer, got to Filter–>Other–>Minimum and set the radius to 1.
6. Now duplicate the bottom layer(the one that still has color) one more time and drag it to the top of your layers. Go to Filter–>Blur–>Gaussian and set the radius number in the box anywhere between 1 and 5. Usually the more detailed the picture, the lower you will want to set the radius. Then set the layer blending mode to “Multiply”.
7. Select the Paint Brush Tool, select the soft round or “fuzzy” brush shape at the top and set the size to fit whatever area you are working on. Set the opacity to 20%.
Go to Layer–>New Layer and name your final layer whatever you wish and hit “OK”.
Then select the color you wish to paint with and paint the area to improve or change colors.

Click on Layers, and then click on Duplicate Layer. With the Background Copy layer active, click on Filter, scroll down to Artistic, and then click on Poster Edges. The default settings should be sufficient, though you can make adjustments as you choose. Click OK to exit the Poster Edges menu. Go back to Filter, down to Artistic, and click on Cutout. In this menu, Number of Levels and Edge Simplicity set at 4, with Edge Fidelity set at 2 appear to give a great effect.
Converting an image to grayscale in Photoshop used to mean simply using the Desaturate option. Photoshop CS3 has introduced the Black and White adjustment, allowing for more control. Click on Image, scroll to Adjustments, and then click on Black & White. Explore the Presets and move the sliders around to get a feel for the customization available. First and foremost method of changing the tone of your colored picture to black and white is by using the easy-to-access hue and saturation layer method. This method completely de-saturates all the livid colors in your picture and transforms it into a colorless black and white picture. Now, after acquiring the desired picture, it is advisable to create a duplicate background and name it accordingly. Next, you have to separate the shadows and highlights from your picture. For this, go to the layers pallet and click on “create new fill” to select “Threshold”. Selecting ‘Threshold’ will transform your picture into black and white. You will notice that an adjustment slider has also opened up. Now on the slider, keep changing your picture until you are satisfied with the separation of black and white quotient in the picture.
Now, you have to create around two hue and saturation layers. These will be two pictures, one being the inverse of the first one. Then Click on a tool that 'magic wand' to check if the tolerance is 100 percent. Now select all the white in the picture by clicking on the white part of your image. You can combine the white color is a little to better effect by selecting the option, "Feather" and convert the radius of 15 pixels.
Now when you select that option, "create new content", you will observe that open a new layer containing your image mask is really the same. After this, save the new layerby clicking ‘Ok’ and rename this new layer as Highlights.
Select the option, “magic wand” for the last time and this time clicking on the black colored area in the picture. You can feather selection one more time to build another saturation layer. Click on ‘Ok’ and save this new layer as ‘shadows’.
