Remote Aerial Photography Equipment & Tools

Photography

The Top and Bottom Line of Equipment & Tools

Remote Aerial Photography Equipment & Tools will explore equipment needs for aerial photographs and video.  The discussion will extend from Professional level equipment to Recreational levels. Our goal is to bring this subject into a clearer, sharper focus.

Regardless which level you choose to enter the field, skills and equipment used for taking unbelievable beautiful remote aerial images will save a lot of money over conventional Aerial Photography methods. Additionally, you will find a sense of accomplishment, and you will obtain a skill that you can use at your discretion, at your pleasure.

A key decision on any pursuit is the money component. That component exists in Remote Aerial Photography as well. First, we will touch briefly on the high-end tools with specificity on two such products before entering a discussion of recreational level budget equipment.

The High End

The first of two examples of high end of Remote Aerial Photography is SkyCamUsa Company specializing in remote aerial photography using a special design helicopter. This flyer is capable to lifting quality photographic equipment of both film and digital formats. Examples of the cameras used include 35mm SL Cine SL35 Mark III, Panasonic HVX 200, and Nikon D2X 12.4 Mega Pixels. The camera equipment alone is valued in thousands of dollars.

DraganFly is a company producing a high-end dual rotor tri-copter flyer capable of carrying high-end camera equipment for High Definition in either still photo’s or video. The DraganFlyer X6′s design handles all photographic needs ranging from still, video, thermal infrared, low light. The purchase price of a base X6 starts at $14,995 up to specialty-equipped level flyers with price available by quote.

Both approaches produce high-level professional photographic results. If financial resources are available, multiple choices exist in this price level.

Aerial Photographic for Most of Us

A question that surfaces most often is, “How can I take that type aerial picture?“ To provide a concise answer requires we narrow the scope of the answer. For this discussion, we will select an Easy Star by Multiplex as our base craft. This choice provides a very stable basic trainer airplane excellent for Aerial Photography. It also has been subject of much development efforts in FPV (First Person View), AP (Aerial Photography), and using OSD (On Screen Display) to provide flight data to the pilot.

Projected cost for this aircraft including RC (Radio Control)equipment to fly the plane is less than $190. That price does not include the other photographic required equipment.

The discussion will follow this segment order.

1. FPV Camera

2. On Screen Display (OSD)

3. Video transmitter/Video Receiver

4. Recorder or Recording camera

FPV in Remote Aerial Photography

FPV Camera

A variety of cameras allow the pilot to fly First Person View (FPV) as if sitting in the airplane. This view is the same as seen by pilots of full size aircraft. In FPV flight, it is easy to know the direction of the four axis. Most FPV uses small cameras providing a resolution of 380 – 520 lines.

Other Remote pilots prefer to use a small FPV camera as mentioned above to fly the craft and have a second on board camera to record the pictures/video. This is a combination of the most accepted approaches. Sometime the pilot triggers the camera other times it just records until reaching storage capacity. This approach usually supports full pan capability in FPV and provides HD level recording of images both video, and stills. FPV camera prices range from $75 – 150 depending on quality with a camera tilt/pan mechanism another $50-70.

OSD: On Screen Display

An OSD (On Screen Display) provides information about the aircraft to the pilot. Not limited to but including altitude, heading, distance from take off point, some provide GPS location.   The purpose is to aid controlling the aircraft when flying FPV. When flying in unfamiliar terrain losing orientation is easy with resultant loss of location to where the plane started the flight. The major advantage of the OSD is it can help you recover direction and return to take off point. There is always an indicator pointing toward where you are so just follow the arrow and it comes home.

One example of a commercial OSD is available from Eagle Tree Systems providing some of the following assist when flying your craft.

1.      Voice announcements and voice alarms so that you don’t have to stare at gauges (less distracting

2.      Waypoints on a virtual map -AP pilots can just fly from waypoint to waypoint easily, and take photos

3.      All the status information about the plane and RX, which can be hidden until something goes wrong, so it’s only a distraction when it needs to be

4.      An available audible variometer can assist in holding altitude.   The price point of a complete Eagle Tree System is between $300-400 depending on specific sensors chosen.

Video Transmitter/Receiver for Remote Aerial Photography

If you want to fly FPV while recording media on the ground, choose a video downlink system on a non-conflicting frequency bandwidth from your chosen flight receiver and transmitter. Popular choices are 2.4 GHz and 900 MHz. There are multiple choices for this equipment in the market. A generic package would include both transmitter and receiver. Cost ranges from $100-300 for both a transmitter and receiver.

Recording Device or Recording Camera

There are many choices for camera equipment as well. This bottom line is how much do you want to spend? Can your flyer lift the chosen camera? Choices range for a simple DVD player to view a FPV input w/o recording to a recording camera. One of the most popular choices for those who want to downlink their video is a camera that serves as a recorder of events while also allowing a real time visual of the input being recorded. Serving as both FPV and media recorder.

One such camera is the Aiptek H/D with personal recorder. The viewing screen is small but does provide both viewing and recording functions. The limitation of using the camera as a downlink remote recording device is the video recording is not H/D.  Choosing this camera to record media on board the plane provides high definition filming while also serving as the FPV camera to fly the craft. The price of a full HD Aiptek ranges from $140-180.

Remote Aerial Photographic Summary

The bottom line for high-end equipment will run from $15,000 – $20,000+ determined by specific equipment choices including camera equipment.

The bottom line for recreational equipment will run from $855 – $1,290 depending on equipment choices. These prices include the Easy Star flyer. This cost develops over time as you progress in your photographic efforts. Careful shopping can minimizes these projections. Obviously cost totals increase by moving to higher end equipment.

Regardless of the approach taken the result will be the ability to produce quality, high-level photographs of scenes, areas, and wildlife not available to most photographers.

Photography – Essentials of a Good Landscape Photo

Photography

Landscape photography has the ability to take your viewers into another place without actually being there. Anybody can pick up a camera and take a photo of an interesting place, but it takes a careful and mindful photographer to take a landscape photo that is truly compelling. Most of the really impressive landscape photos that you will see have a few common elements. They have some type of foreground element, some type of framing element, and they all comply with the rule of thirds in some way.

Foreground Elements

In order to show the depth of a landscape it is very important to include some type of foreground element. Without something in the foreground, the viewer has no way to distinguish distances or sizes; everything looks more flat and closer to the camera. A foreground element adds a substantial amount of improvement to what would be a drab amateur photo. But when using foreground elements in landscape photos make sure you use a very narrow aperture (high f/stop) so the whole scene will be in focus.

Just about anything can be used as a foreground element but of course some things work better than others. For example, when I am taking landscape photos in the Napa Valley I always include some grape vines close to the camera leading off into the distance. That way, the viewer’s eye is drawn into the photo more effectively because the grape vines lead the viewer’s eyes deeper into the photo. The vines also perform the function of providing the viewer with some idea of the size of the Napa Valley because the vines in my photos go from being large when they are close to the camera to being tiny as they lead off into the distance.

Some photographers like to use foreground objects that are really more like subjects. One example of this would be a boat sitting on a long beach or a car staring down a long road. Other photographers like to use simpler foreground elements such as long grass with large fields in the background or a rusty railing with a city standing in the distance. Sometimes when foreground elements and background elements don’t seem to fit together the result can be even more compelling. A good example of this would be photos taken from Central Park in New York City with grass and trees in the foreground and massive corporate buildings in the background.

Framing Elements

Framing is the tactic of using natural surroundings to add more meaning to your subject. It could be anything such as bushes, trees, a window, or even a doorway. A good example of this would be tree branches that occupy the top part of the frame pointing out at your landscape. I once saw a great photo of the Eiffel Tower in Paris; the photo was from a distance and it had tree branches covered in pink flowers in the foreground all pointing towards the Eiffel Tower that was off in the distance. Framing elements commonly either add more meaning to the subject by surrounding the subject or by simply pointing in the direction of the main subject.

In the process of doing this you need to be careful that you don’t only focus on what’s framing your subject. Make sure you focus on the main subject, and also it is a good idea to use a narrow aperture (high f/stop) to achieve a high depth-of-field. It also wouldn’t hurt if the part of the scene framing the subject was darker so make sure you take your light reading on the main subject such as in a shadow filled archway leading into a large courtyard.

Rule of Thirds

The rule of thirds might seem overused and artistically unnecessary, but the photographers who hold true to the rule tend to create the nicest landscape photos. Since landscape photos are so broad they need some type of structure that the rule of thirds provides. The rule of thirds means that the frame can be divided into three horizontal sections and three vertical sections and therefore, where the horizontal and vertical lines intersect makes an ideal location for the more important parts of your picture. For landscape photographers, the divisions can also be very important in setting up a picture; they can for example, help you determine that only 1/3 of the photo should be foreground or horizon.

Photography For Profit

Photography

There are ways for an amateur photographer to get recognition and financial reward and that’s by selling photographs. Publications are always in the market for appropriate photographs, colour or black and white. The major national and international magazines usually pay the best rates for pictures. But they are the most difficult to sell because you have competition from staff photographers and professional free-lancers who are hired on a regular basis.

Fortunately, many regional, specialty, and company magazines, as well as area newspapers, are glad to have colour transparencies or prints, or black and white prints submitted for publication. Payment can range from only a photo credit line mentioning your name to a check for hundreds of dollars. Contact the publications and ask for a copy of their guidelines for submitting photographs.

The most valuable source for finding publications that buy photographs is Photographer’s Market, a book that is updated and published annually by Writer’s Digest Books. It describes hundreds of publications, including their addresses and telephone numbers, the types of pictures they use, rates of pay and the name of the photo editor or art director to whom you should submit your photos. Copies of this exceptional photo market guide are available at libraries and bookstores. Be certain to use only the current year’s edition, because publications frequently change their picture requirements.

Pictures bought for advertising rather than editorial use pay the most money. However, use of a photo in an advertisement requires model releases signed by all recognizable persons. These releases give the photographer permission to use the photograph and help avoid any subsequent lawsuits by persons in the picture. Advertisers may also require property release if a building or other identifiable property is prominent in the picture. Standard release forms are sold at many camera stores; carry some in your camera bag in case you come across a subject you think might eventually be sold to an advertiser.

One of the best publications with down to earth advice is the ASMP Professional Business Practices in Photography, 6th edition, published by the American Society of Media Photographers, Inc.. Copies are available at some bookstores and camera stores or directly from ASMP.

If you are thinking about becoming a professional photographer, it’s also worthwhile to read magazines published for the pros and their special interests. Among them is the newsy Photo District news, which covers everything from stock and advertising photography to digital imaging. It’s available by subscription and is also sold by some camera stores, bookstores and newsstands.

One way to start on the road to a photographic career is to take informal portraits of friends and other people. You can improve your camera skills while making enough money to cover the cost of film and prints. However, until you achieve a state of proficiency and confidence in your work, be careful that your subjects don’t expect a more professional result than you can deliver.

Whenever money is involved, make certain your subjects know how much you will charge them for photographs. And be sure that they understand you expect payment upon delivery of the pictures. Although people are always anxious to see the finished prints, once the photographs are in their hands they often are in no hurry to pay you; let them know you expect to be paid immediately.

Many times recognition and payment act as stimulants toward making you a photographer. Well-known photographer Philippe Halsman, whose portraits were featured on more than 100 Life magazine covers, put it this way, “I drifted into photography like one drifts into prostitution. First I did it to please myself, then I did it to please my friends and eventually I did it for money”.

Regardless of your specific interest or goals, the more you photograph, the more your photographs will improve. Start making photographs, then keep making better photographs. And most of all, enjoy your photography.
